Dexter boys’ basketball coach Jason Rushton said, “it’s nice to be back in the win column” following his team’s 63-28 victory at Monroe Tuesday night in an SEC contest. But the coach was more pleased with how they played than the overall results – which often go hand in hand.
“It was nice to see our team play a complete 32 minutes of Dexter basketball,” Rushton said. “We defended, we rebounded, we ran, we executed and we made shots. I couldn’t be more proud of the way we responded.”
Rushton stressed the importance of getting back to “Dexter basketball” and not just for this game but for down the road.
“We told our guys before the game that our culture was on the line,” he said. “Everything the guys before them worked for was on the line with us. And they came out ready to play.”
Evan Haroldson played “his best game of the year” with 24 points, 10 rebounds and 4 assists. Xavier Blumberg added 9 points and 4 assists. Reeves Taylor had 8 points and 11 rebounds. Sophomore Ben Murphy also had 8 points. Every Dexter player scored in the win.
The Dreadnaughts took a 15-8 lead in the first quarter and then went on a 16-5 run in the second quarter for a 31-13 lead at halftime. Dexter played one of its best quarters of the season in the third when they outscored their hosts 23-9.
“We’re ready to continue to build off of this and get ready for the next one,” Rushton said.
The next one is Friday at Pioneer.
