Boys Basketball: Cold-shooting Dexter falls to Pioneer in SEC Red contest

Pioneer scored 22 points in the third quarter to pull away from Dexter on Friday night in a 60-50 win over the visiting Dreadnaughts in an SEC Red matchup.

Dexter led 11-6 in a low scoring first quarter. Pioneer outscored Dexter 14-5 in the second quarter and 22-14 in the third period. Dexter scored 20 to Pioneer’s 18 in the fourth quarter. 

“We didn’t shoot the ball well all night, and then Pioneer shot it very well in the second half and that was the difference in the game,” said Dexter Coach Jason Rushton.

Nate Freisthler knocked down two triples and finished with a game-high 17 points for the host Pioneers. Freisthler had eight points in the fourth quarter. Reed Yuhas made all six free-throw attempts in the fourth quarter and finished with 14 points. Nelson Sompa scored seven and Dylan Pacernick and Tyler Mutinda each scored five.

Evan Haroldson led Dexter with 17 points, including three triples. Freshman Jack DeMerell added 12 points, 5 rebounds and 4 assists. AJ Vaughn and Xavier Blumberg each had five points.

Dexter plays at Bedford on Tuesday and at Huron on Friday.

Pioneer plays at Monroe on Tuesday and hosts Bedford on Thursday.
