Girls Basketball: Dexter’s second-quarter run too much for Pioneer (See photo gallery)

The Dexter girls’ basketball team has the unique ability to strike at any moment and go for a nice run on the offensive end. They also are tenacious on defense and can shut down an opponent for long stretches. Those two things came together in the second quarter on Thursday night at Pioneer.

With the game tied at 12-12 early in the second quarter, the Dreadnaughts went on a 10-2 run to take a 22-14 lead into halftime over the host Pioneers. Dexter would push the lead to 14 points after three quarters and cruise to a 45-24 win in an SEC Red matchup between two well-coached and talented basketball teams.

Dexter, winners of three straight, improved to 13-5 on the season while Pioneer fell to 7-10.

Chloe Perry had a big night for the Dreadnaughts. The talented senior knocked down two triples in the game and converted some aggressive drives to the basket to finish with a game-high 20 points. Alena Blumberg, only a sophomore, had three triples in the game and scored 12 points. Bailey Krueger had four points and Kendall Cabana, Addison Chase and Alyssa Gullekson all scored three for the Dreads.

Pioneer’s Savannah Brewer led the home team with 11 points. The senior easily could have scored more but had some bad luck with a few shots that looked good but wouldn’t fall on this night. Emmanuel Davis had four points and Jordan Davis scored three for the Pioneers.

Blumberg and then Perry knocked down triples to give Dexter an 18-12 lead in the second quarter to break that 12-12 deadlock. Then Krueger scored inside and then scored again inside off a nice steal and pass from Cabana to push Dexter in front 22-12. Pioneer’s Emmanual Davis scored to bring it back to single digits and 22-14 at the half.

Emmanuel Davis cut the deficit to 22-16 early in the third quarter before Perry and Blumberg answered with three-pointers to push Dexter’s lead to 28-16. Perry’s drive to the hoop drove the lead to 30-17 with 4:20 left in the quarter.

Dexter led 34-20 after three quarters and outscored Pioneer 11-4 in the fourth quarter.
