Track & Field: And they’re off – Dexter track team opens season with indoor meet

The Dexter track & field team kicked off its season with the SEC Invite at Ypsilanti Lincoln’s Athletic Building on March 23. The indoor meet featured all 14 members of the Southeastern Conference. There were no team scores kept, but the Dreadnaughts had several great performances.

Starting off on the boys team on the track was Brandon Anderson placing 7th in the 400m with a time of 53.59. Teammate Owen Ackerman took 3rd in the 1600m with 4:40.87. In the 4×800 relay, Dexter had a 6th place finish. The relay team of Ackerman, Dane Barbaro, Cole Doty, and Vaughn Meyer were clocked with a time of 9:02.35.

In the field events the boys saw two Dreads place in the High Jump. Ryan Kerr tied for 2nd with a jump of 5’10”, and Austin Terpak tied for 5th with a mark of 5’8”. Dexter also took 3 places in the Pole Vault. Clark Sheldon had the top vault with a 1st place finish at 13’0”, Kaden Korcek finished tied for 3rd at 11’6”, and Barrett Keller tied for 5th at 11’0”.

The Girls team also placed several athletes. Freshman Chloe Burns crossed the tape in the 200m with a first place finish and a time of 27.64, and Freshman Lillian Mitchell took 6th in the 4oom with a time of 1:04.26. Two Dreads placed in the 800m, with Addison Bruckman taking 4th with 2:35.34, and Antonia Bruckman taking 8th at 2:46.15.

The Relays were busy as well. In the 4×200, Dexter took 7th with a time of 1:57.23 with the team of Lauren Simpson, Autumn Taylor, Emily Kate Covert, and Raiden Kipfmiller. The 4×400 relay team of Maddie Rokke-Smith, C. Burns, Bailey Krueger, and Addison Bruckman placed 5th with 4:29.63. The 4×800 finished 4th with Addison Bruckman, Hannah Bougher, Mitchell, and Kate Varitek with a 10:39.29 time.

Out in the field events, Lily Burns placed 8th in the Girls Shot Put with a toss of 29’1.5”, and Tia Schults finished tied for 6th in the High Jump with 4’6”. And in the Pole Vault, three Dreads placed with Freshman Raiden Kipmiller leading the way winning the event with a vault of 11’6”. Followed by Freshman teammate Debbie McCoy taking 2nd at 10’0”, and Bethany Simons finishing tied for 7th at 8’0”.

The Dreadnaughts return to the track on April 10 in Double Dual action with Temperance Bedford and Ann Arbor Pioneer in Temperance.
