Girls Soccer: Pioneer responds from loss to Skyline with 1-0 win over Dexter (SEE PHOTO GALLERY)

The Dexter girls’ soccer team headed to Pioneer just a day after opening the season with an 8-0 win over Lincoln. The Dreadnaughts knew this match would be much different.

Pioneer was coming off a 5-0 loss to Skyline just 24 hours earlier. The Pioneers knew this match would be much different.

The two SEC Red teams battled it out all game in a contest that was very evenly matched from start to finish. Pioneer ended up being the one to finish a run with a goal to score a 1-0 win over the visiting Dreadnaughts on a perfect evening for soccer.

In fact, the only thing better than the weather was the game on the field.

Both teams played hard and both showed a lot of skill. The chemistry was there at times but that will get better as the season moves along. Dexter and Pioneer should both do well this season in an always tough division.

With 27:49 left in the game, Pioneer’s Kaylie Karsch got the ball between three Dexter defenders and found just enough space to rifle a shot over the head of Dexter keeper Braedy Wineman, who had no chance at stopping this one. Karsch not only put some steam behind that shot but placed it perfectly under the crossbar and over Wineman’s fingertips to give the home team a 1-0 lead.

And that ended up being the only goal of the night.

Pioneer’s Jordan Knox pitched the shutout, keeping a strong Dexter team off the board.

Skyline 5, Pioneer 0

The Eagles got goals from five different players – Rori Deyer, Aurora Dillaway Brater, Jade Thompson, Brianna Ferguson, and Lucy Serlin – to open the season with an impressive 5-0 win over the Pioneers on Tuesday night.

“It was our first game so our result was anything but expected,” said Skyline Coach Chris Morgan. “The girls have been training well, and putting forth a lot of effort, but in a rivalry game anything can happen. We are going to be a dangerous team, but just how dangerous remains to be seen. We were especially pleased with the fact that everyone contributed and played hard.”

Skyline keepers Sofia Nehro and Ainsley Gardner were instrumental in keeping the clean sheet, as both made a couple quality saves.

“Pioneer has a lot of pace up top and they were pressuring our back line all game,” Morgan said. “If we are going to be successful, we will need to stay as healthy as possible throughout the season.”
