AAPS: Pioneer students selected to compete at the Fisher Theater on Sunday

Four Pioneer students have been selected to compete in the Sutton Foster Awards sponsored by the Wharton Center – a statewide high school musical theater competition at Fisher Theater, this Sunday, May 21.

The students were nominated for their performances in Pioneer Theatre Guild’s fall production of INTO THE WOODS. Judges came to see the show, provided feedback for various areas of the production, and nominated four of our actors to compete in the competition. The winners of the Sutton Foster Awards go on to compete for the Jimmy Awards in New York City—the national high school musical theatre awards.

The nominees are:

Connor Casey as the Bakey

Tessa Hanrath as Little Red Riding Hood

Chava Klayman as the Baker’s Wife

Emmanuel Morgan as Jack

PTG Director Jayme Kelmigian says that when she lived in New York City prior to teaching in AAPS, she worked for the Broadway League, which produces the Jimmy Awards (and the Tony Awards). She served as the Jimmy Awards Assistant in 2015, the Jimmy Awards Event Relations Coordinator in 2016, and a Jimmy Awards chaperone in 2017.

“So being back in Michigan and having students from my high school musical theater program at Pioneer be nominated for our local Michigan awards is extremely exciting!” she says. “It feels like a full circle moment being on the other side of this program which is near and dear to my heart.”
