Dexter Around Town: Parker Road construction; bicycles; volunteers needed, more

Parker Road Culvert Replacement

During the 2023 construction season, the Washtenaw County Road Commission (WCRC) plans to replace a culvert on Parker Rd between Shield Rd and Dexter-Chelsea Rd in Lima & Scio Townships. The exact start date of the construction is still yet to be determined. During construction, Parker Rd will be closed to all traffic and a detour route will be posted. This closure is expected to be in place for approximately seven weeks, weather pending.

Thank you to those who were able to attend our virtual public meeting on Thursday, May 18, 2023. If you weren’t able to join us, click here to watch the meeting recording or check out the slide show. WCRC will send out updates as the project progresses.

Questions about the project? Contact Nate Murphy, project manager, at (734) 327-6647, or via email at murphyn@wcroads.org.

Walking Your Bicycles on Downtown Sidewalks

As the weather continues to improve, the City of Dexter would like to remind residents that bicycle usage on downtown sidewalks and in Monument Park is prohibited. The usage of bikes on the sidewalks creates increased risk of pedestrian-bicycle collisions as people walk on the sidewalks or enter/exit businesses. We ask the bicyclists “walk your wheels” if they plan to use the downtown sidewalks in an effort to keep our community safe and mitigate collisions.

Bicentennial Call for Volunteers

The City of Dexter will be celebrating its 200 year anniversary in 2024 and the Bicentennial Committee is looking for volunteers to make it happen! Whether you are looking to volunteer at an event or two or have an idea of your own, reach out to dexterbicentennial@gmail.com to learn more and get involved!

Registering Your Historic Home

The Michigan Heritage Home™ program recognizes houses that were constructed at least 100 years ago and are in substantially original condition. That designation comes with a recognition certificate suitable for framing and a handsome, Michigan forged, cast-aluminum plaque that lets everyone know your home has its own rich heritage.

For more information on how you can recognize your home with a Michigan Heritage Home plaque, visit the Historical Society of Michigan: https://www.hsmichigan.org/awards/michigan-heritage-home.

For local information or assistance with the application, the Dexter Area Historical Society graciously offers their support. Email: dexmuseum@aol.com
