Tennis: All three Ann Arbor teams headed to State Finals

All three Ann Arbor tennis teams will compete at the MHSAA Division 1 State Finals June 1-2 in Holland. The three schools netted the top three spots at the Regional held on May 19 at Pioneer HS.

The Pioneers finished first with 32 points followed by Skyline with 19 points and Huron with 18. Saline was fourth overall with 13 points. Pioneer took first in all four singles and all four doubles events.

Pioneer are the defending state champions. They defeated Bloomfield Hills by one point at last year’s state finals. 

At one singles, Pioneer’s Elsie Van Wieren defeated Skyline’s Sari Woo 2-0, 2-0 (default) in the finals. Van Wieren was the state champion at two singles last year.

At two singles, Pioneer’s Bridgette Kelly beat Skyline’s Erika Sauld 6-0, 6-0. Kelly was the state champion at four singles a year ago.

At three singles, Juliana Pullen netted a 6-0, 6-3 win over Skyline’s Maddie Slade.

At four singles, Pioneer’s Sophia Liang defeated Skyline’s Vanessa Roche 6-1, 6-3.

The Pioneers also dominated the doubles events.

In one doubles, the Pioneer team of Mia Berens and Natalie Guo defeated Saline 6-0, 6-0 in the finals. The Pioneer team of Eleanor Vogel and Casey Roe defeated Skyline’s Isabella Somers and Stephanie Chen 6-2, 6-1 in the finals at two doubles.

In three doubles, the Pioneer team of Elita you and Arella He defeated Huron’s team of Caroline Hemmila and Ana Wilkins 6-2, 6-1 in the finals.

In four doubles, the Pioneer team of Noa Gluskin and Jessica Primus defeated the Huron team of Maya Fu and Janaki Nallamothu 6-2, 6-1 in the finals.
