Soccer: Saline edges Skyline 2-1 in overtime of District final

Skyline met Saline in the championship game last week in a District final at Lincoln HS. While the two teams played draws during the regular season, a winner had to be decided in this match – and it was quite the competitive game.

The first half went back and forth without a goal – until there was just 20 seconds left on the clock. Off a corner kick, Saline’s Sadie Walsh headed the ball that took a bounce before landing in the back of the net to give the Hornets a 1-0 lead.

The Eagles came out strong in the second half, creating many chances. Hadley Zann scored directly off a corner kick with 20 minutes remaining in the game to tie the score at 1-1. Neither team could break the tie in regulation.

It was only fitting the game would head to overtime.

In the first 10-minute period, both teams had a few chances, but were unable to score. The second period was more of the same, until Saline’s Nada Derneika scored off a long free kick with 3 minutes remaining to win the game and the District title.

Skyline began postseason play with a 3-0 win over Dexter in a District opener. The Eagles then defeated Belleville 5-0 in a District semifinal game on to reach the finals. Saline edged Pioneer 2-1 in the other semifinal game. Pioneer opened District play with a 2-1 win over Huron.

Saline advanced to the Woodhaven Regional.
