Track & Field: Dreadnaughts compete at Larry Steeb Meet, MHSAA State Finals

Dexter wrapped up its 2023 season by traveling to West Michigan to compete in the Division 1 Track & Field State Championship hosted by Rockford High School on Saturday, June 3rd. Temperatures were some of the hottest that the team had competed in this season, and nonetheless had some outstanding performances.

On the girls side, Oak Park won the team title, followed by Detroit Renaissance, and Ann Arbor Pioneer for third. The boys State Champion was St. Joseph, with runner-up Clinton Twp. Chippewa Valley, followed by host school Rockford for third. Both the Dexter boys and girls finished outside the top 20.

Leading the way was the Pole Vault squad, starting off with Clark Sheldon finishing in 5th place with a jump of 14’ 0”, followed by senior teammate Barret Keller clearing 13’ 0” for a spot at 14th. Lady Dreads were also represented in the vault, with Debbie McCoy also placing. Jumping 11’ 3”, that was good enough for seventh, while Raiden Kipfmiller took ninth, also clearing 11’ 3” but lost the tie breaker to misses. Senior Milaka Sposito ended her season going 9’ 9” finishing in 24th.

Dexter’s top runner, Brandon Anderson ran in the boys 800m where track temperatures flirted with triple digits. Anderson’s time of 1:56.34 finished in 14th., only a few 1/100ths of his personal best.

Dexter will celebrate their season with friends and family at their awards night on June 12th.

Larry Steeb Meet of Champions

Dexter hosted their annual Larry Steeb Meet of Champions on Tuesday under hot, sunny skies. The championship meet brought representatives from 41 different schools throughout Southeastern Michigan to compete with some of the top athletes in the State.

On the track for the Dexter boys, Francisco Morales-Leverett was fifth in the 110 meter High Hurdles with a time of 16.30, and Brandon Anderson was sixth in the 400m run with a time of 51.67. Anderson was also a member of the Dexter 4×800 relay that placed third with a time of 8:20.80. That team consisted of Owen Ackerman, Kaden Jensen, Rylan Teddy and Anderson.

Clark Sheldon was the boys top placer out in the field events, taking a fifth place in the Pole Vault, clearing the bar at 14’ 0”.

For the Lady Dreads, Mikala Sposito finished seventh in the 200m with her time of 27.16. While Lillian Mitchell ran the 800m with a time of 2:20.90, good enough for eighth. Freshman Avery Hoeft ran in the Freshman 1600m run also finishing eighth with her time of 5:59.29.

Dexter girls represented the field events, starting in the throwing events where Lily Burns, with a throw of 34’ 9” took fifth, and teammate Lily Trinkle was eighth in Discus with a toss of 92’ 9”. Jumping events saw Bria Rapp place sixth in the High Jump clearing the bar at 4’ 10”, and in the Pole Vault, Dexter had two placers. Raiden Kipfmiller finished third clearing 10’ 9”, and teammate Debbie McCoy right behind in fourth also going 10’ 9”
