Around Town Dexter: Road closures, tree planting, more

Hydrant Flushing

City Utility Department staff have started the process of flushing hydrants throughout the City. The schedule for the week of October 2nd is as follows:

Dexter Schools Campus, Original Village Neighborhoods, Huron Farms

As crews flush hydrants, there may be some discoloration of the water. Residents who experience “rust colored” water should simply run the cold water tap for a few minutes to clear the household pipes.  The rust coloring is caused by a natural buildup of minerals in the water system, which are stirred up in the water pipes when fire hydrants are first turned on.  If possible, try to avoid washing white clothes during this time. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact the Utility Department at 734-426-4572 during the hours of 7 am and 3:30 pm. Thank you for your cooperation during this effort to maintain the quality of your water system.

Tree Planting Volunteer Day – October 14th

ReLeaf Michigan, a statewide non-profit tree organization, in collaboration with the City of Dexter, the DTE Energy Foundation, and the Huron River Watershed Council, is looking for volunteers to help plant 30 trees in the Westridge Subdivision on Saturday, October 14, 2023.

Volunteers are asked to wear closed-toe shoes and comfortable clothing and bring a shovel, hard rake, and work gloves, if they have them. The group will meet at the Bridgeway Dr. cul-de-sac, 8200-8238 Bridgeway Dr, Dexter, MI 48130 at 8:45 am to sign in, enjoy refreshments, and watch a planting demonstration with ReLeaf Michigan’s tree experts.

Families are welcome! The event occurs rain or shine. No planting experience is necessary. Join us for the morning and leave an environmental legacy that will add to the beauty of your community for generations. We hope to see you there! Trees provide incredible benefits to the communities in which they are planted. Trees improve air and water quality, reduce stormwater runoff, improve mental wellness, reduce childhood asthma rates, cool our neighborhoods, and enhance commercial and economic vitality.

Mill Creek Park Volunteer Day – October 28th

Have a green thumb? A workday in Mill Creek Park will be held on Saturday, October 28, 2023 from 8:00 am to 12:00 pm. Volunteers are welcome to come get their hands dirty as we work to prepare the park’s plants for winter in various areas of Mill Creek Park. Volunteers are not required to stay the entire time. Come and join as your time allows!

A hawker/peddler permit to go door to door in the City has been issued to Golden K Cleaning Systems. The approved hours of operation are 9 am to 5 pm from October 2, 2023 to November 2, 2023.
