Students enrolled in Huron High School’s IB Diploma and Career-related Program took part this week in a “Day of Service” with the Freeman Environmental Education Center.
This project is an extension of Huron’s work with Freeman in the spring when the DP/CP Students Class of 2024 spent more than a day there. This fall, they are returning as leaders of the Class of 2025 for a collaborative service project.
Both the Diploma and Career-related Programs have service elements built into their core experience. The focus is for students to reflect on learning outcomes from their service.
Due to the size of the programs and the volunteers available at Freeman, each student spent a half-day at Freeman—on either Thursday or Friday.
“Our big goal,” said Chris Erickson, Huron’s DP CAS Coordinator, and CP Service Learning Coordinator, “is to get students to engage in service learning for that reciprocal engagement where we get to help the Freeman Center plant trees, and we also get to have an experience where we get to give back to this larger Ann Arbor Public Schools community that we’re a part of.”
