The pairings for the 2023 MHSAA Football Playoffs were announced on Sunday and three local teams are heading to the postseason with all three opening up on the road.
Teams were divided into divisions before the start of play this fall. The top 32 teams in each division in 11-player, based on playoff-point average, were selected to the field. Qualifiers were then divided into four regions with eight teams apiece.
Pairings for the first three weeks of the tournament are based on regular-season playoff point averages, with the highest-ranked team hosting, regardless of the distance between the two schools. In the District Semifinal, the top-seeded team in each bracket will host the fourth-seeded team, and the second-seeded team will host the third-seeded team.
District Finals will follow during the weekend of Nov. 3-4, and the weekend of Nov. 10-11 will have Regional Finals. Semifinal games will take place Nov. 17-18, pairing the winners of Region 1 vs. Region 2 and the winners of Region 3 vs. Region 4. The MHSAA will assign 11-Player Semifinals at neutral sites.
All playoff tickets except for Finals will be sold online only via GoFan at gofan.co/ to provide for a cashless and contactless purchasing process.
Tickets to District Semifinals and District Finals cost $7, tickets to Regional Finals are $9, and tickets to Semifinals cost $10.
Division 1
Following consecutive one-win seasons, Pioneer returns to the playoffs following an impressive 6-3 record. The Pioneers head into the playoffs riding a five-game winning streak including Friday’s 21-6 win over Pinckney. They have not lost since consecutive 56-0 losses to Saline and Dexter in weeks three and four.
The Pioneers will get a chance to avenge the loss to the Hornets as they drew Saline in the first round. Saline, which will host the game, won its first eight games of the season before falling to undefeated Lake Orion 35-28 in its final regular-season game.
The winner will play the winner of the Huron-Belleville game next week.
The River Rats defeated Holt 35-0 in the final regular-season game of the year to finish 5-4 and grab a playoff spot. The reward is playing the No. 1 team in the state in undefeated Belleville.
After winning just one game in 2019, Huron has reached the state finals four consecutive years. In 2021, the River Rats lost a playoff opener 14-10 to the Tigers, who went on to win a state title. Belleville also won a state title last year and the Tigers have lost only five games since 2017.
Division 2
Dexter fielded a young team in 2023 and the Dreadnaughts rebounded from an 0-2 start with a six-game winning streak before losing Friday to rival Chelsea 31-21. The Dreadnaughts bring a very inexperienced, yet dangerous team, into the playoffs.
Dexter faces 8-1 Allen Park in the first round at Allen Park. This game could be similar to what happened in 2018 when the Dreads lost their final game of the season but almost knocked off undefeated host South Lyon in the first round – losing in overtime.
Both teams have high-scoring offenses. Allen Park has scored over 35 points in every game except its 20-18 loss to Carlson on Oct. 13. The Jaguars finished the year with a 39-14 win over Redford Union and went 3-1 against playoff teams.
Dexter faced bigger schools – Livonia Franklin and Saline, for example – and went 2-3 against playoff teams. That strong competition could be a factor in Friday’s playoff opener.
The winner will play the winner of Gibraltar Carlson-Livonia Churchill.
