Field Hockey: Dominant Dexter coasts to D-2 State Finals, face rival Chelsea

It’s rivalry day in field hockey on Saturday.

While Skyline will face Pioneer in the Division 1 state finals, Dexter will take on Chelsea in the Division 2 state finals. Both games are at The Hawk at Farmington Hills Community Center (29995 W. 12 Mile).

The Division 2 Finals will begin at 11 a.m., with the D-1 game at 2 p.m.

The Dreadnaughts, the No. 1 seed, have dominated the postseason from the get-go. Dexter opened the playoffs with 8-0 wins over St. Catherines and East Grand Rapids. They faced Detroit Country Day, the fourth seed, in the semifinals on Thursday in Farmington Hills and scored an impressive 7-0 victory.

On the other side of the bracket, Chelsea, the second seed, defeated Father Gabriel Richard 2-0. FGR was third seeded in the tournament.

Dexter is 19-1-2 on the season. The only loss came to Skyline 7-2 on Sept. 27. They tied Skyline 3-3 and Huron 1-1 during the regular season.

The Dreadnaughts and Bulldogs have played twice during the season. Dexter won 4-0 on Sept. 6 and 2-1 on Oct. 4.

The Dreadnaughts are the defending state champion. Dexter defeated University Liggett 2-0 in last year’s state finals. The Dreads only allowed one goal in last year’s championship run (to Chelsea) and have yet to allow a goal in three games this season.
