Dexter Community Orchestra presents “When in Rome,” Sunday, Nov. 5

A musical tour of Rome awaits you at the upcoming concert by the Dexter Community Orchestra, Sunday, Nov. 5, at 4 p.m. at Dexter High School.

Music Director David Schultz has chosen two dazzling orchestral showpieces to begin and end the program: Berlioz’s “Roman Festival Overture” and Respighi’s “The Pines of Rome”. Both pieces are filled with musical fireworks, as well as quieter depictions of Italian life.

Also on the program are Haydn’s “Cello Concerto No. 2”, featuring guest artist Thor Sigurdson, and “House of Fountains” by contemporary composer Stephanie Anne Boyd. The piece depicts the composer’s dream of her grandmother, and a magical house surrounded by beautiful fountains.

Concert attendees will have a chance to enter a drawing, the winner of which will conduct the orchestra in a performance of “Sleigh Ride” at the DCO’s “Together for the Holidays” concert on December 10. No prior conducting experience – or even musical knowledge – is required. Just wave around the baton, and the orchestra will do the rest! The winner will be selected and announced at intermission.

As always concerts by the DCO are free and open to the public, no ticket required.
