Water Polo: Pioneer, Huron, Dexter compete this weekend in State Finals

Three local teams are heading to the Michigan Water Polo Association State Finals this weekend at Birmingham Groves High School. Pioneer will face East Kentwood (4 p.m.) while Huron faces Hudsonville (7:45 p.m.) and Dexter plays Rockford (6:30 p.m.) in first-round games on Friday, Nov. 10. 

Second-round games along with the finals are on Saturday. The championship game will be played at 4:45 p.m. All teams play throughout the weekend to establish the top eight.

Hudsonville has won the last four state titles.    

Pioneer and Huron met in the East Regional final last Saturday with the Pioneers winning 17-13 over the River Rats. Pioneer also defeated Huron 10-8 in the District final.

Pioneer defeated Grand Blanc 15-5 and Dexter 15-5 to reach the final. Huron knocked off Seaholm 14-8 and Groves 12-7 in its run to the championship game.

Dexter defeated Walled Lake 12-11 in the first round before falling to Pioneer 15-5. The Dreadnaughts lost to Groves 12-11 in their final Regional game.

Rockford defeated Wilddogs in the West Regional final.
