The Huron-Skyline girls’ hockey team lost only two games last year, including one in a heartbreaking triple overtime state semifinals loss to Grosse Pointe South. The team went 23-2-1 overall (2-1 in the playoffs) last year during an amazing season under fifth-year coach Paul Dionne.
But that one loss was put on ice during the off-season and it’s time to thaw it out and put things right this season. “Yeah, we have a bit of a chip on our shoulder,” said Dionne. “And already, just a few weeks into the season, you can tell the girls are hungry and focused.”
The team lost some key players off last year’s team including Ava Heung, who was named Michigan Miss Hockey 2023 and now plays for the University of Michigan. But Coach Dionne has plenty of talent to put on the ice in 2023-24.
Key returning players include Khaleela Hodge (F, senior), Kennedy Marks (F, senior), Kendall Clavier (F, senior), Julianna Heung (F, junior), Lilly Shannon (D, senior), and Lily Hescheles (D, senior).
New players to watch include freshman Corrine Sczomak (defense) and sophomore Estelle Haft (forward).
“Our team strengths include speed, skating, experience and camaraderie,” says Dionne. “We need to keep working on the power play, and offensive zone strategies.”
The goal is simple – to win a D-1 State Title. And help erase that one painful loss last season.
The team, which plays out of Veteran’s Memorial Ice Arena, opened the season with a 2-0 win over Washtenaw United. Circle Dec. 20 on the calendar when Huron-Skyline will face Pioneer at 5 p.m. at the Vet.
