By Kristen Loszewski

Pioneer Crew closed out its Fall 2023 competition season on Saturday, October 21, at the Arctic Classic, hosted by Northville High School. Crews from 11 schools and clubs raced on an 1,800 meter course from the Buno Bridge to Maple Beach on Kent Lake at Kensington Metropark in Milford, Mich.

The day was sunny and chilly with 45℉ temps at 8:00 A.M. warming to a high of 53℉, and winds from the northwest ranging from 8-14 mph. Rowers welcomed the absence of rain, which held off until the mid-afternoon finish.

Pioneer entered 24 boats in 17 races, in 2x, 4+, and 8+ crews. The team earned 10 medals, representing impressive performances for both the men’s and women’s squads in all categories, including mixed and men’s novice 8s. The field of competitors included Ann Arbor Skyline, Culver Academies (Indiana), St. Francis (Toledo), Cranbrook Kingswood, Saline, Ann Arbor Huron, Perrysburg (Ohio), Traverse City Tritons, Wyandotte Boat Club, and Northville Rowing Club.
