Boys Basketball: Huron pulls away from young Dexter in SEC opener

The young Dexter boys’ basketball team competed well early on against the talented Huron River Rats on Tuesday in an SEC Red opener for both schools. The Dreadnaughts were playing well and were within three points at 17-14 after one quarter.

But the host River Rats switched gears in the second quarter and the Dreadnaughts just couldn’t keep up. Huron outscored Dexter 21-4 in that second quarter and cruised to a 74-39 win.

The River Rats outscored the Dreads 17-12 in the third quarter and 19-9 in the fourth.

Dexter falls to 2-1 overall (0-1 SEC Red).

“I thought we did a really good job matching their energy and effort in the first quarter, as it was their season opener,” said Dexter Coach Jason Rushton. “We found ourselves down 17-14, but we were playing good basketball and matching almost shot for shot. But, we couldn’t sustain that pace for the remaining three quarters against a very good Huron team.”

Jack DeMerell made three triples and finished with a game-high 17 points and Ben Murphy also made three triples and finished with 14 points for the Dreadnaughts. Garrett Sharp and Scott Smith each scored four for Dexter.

“With our young group, we’re going to file this one away and get back to the weight room tomorrow, hit the court and prepare for a tough Ypsilanti Lincoln team on Thursday,” said Rushton.

Five Huron players scored eight or more points in the win. Jaydon Keefer, a senior guard, knocked down five triples in the game and finished with a team-high 15 points. Senior Justin Latham and junior Macari Moore each scored 12 points and junior Kaleb Brown had 11 points. Senior Mo Doumbouya had eight points. Senior Cris Brown had five points.

The River Rats will play at Bedford on Friday.
