Swimming: Dexter opens season with strong performances in easy wins

The Dexter boys’ swimming and diving team have splashed off to an impressive 3-0 start on the young season. After opening up with a 122-62 win over Jackson on Dec. 7, the Dreadnaughts one two matches with one jump in the pool as they defeated Chelsea (130-56) and Milan (137-45) in a tri-meet on Dec. 12 at Chelsea.

Dexter opened the meet at Chelsea with a win in the medley relay. The team of Matthew Resende, Jack Haidl, Dylan O’Connor and Jude Smith swam a winning time of 1 minute, 50.49 seconds. Chelsea was second in 1:53.05. Dexter’s B team of Eric Smaby, Jason Hazelton, Steven Merz and Lucas Coy was a close third in 1:53.52.

Dexter freshman Anthony Kopinski won the 200 free in 1:52.16 with sophomore Ethan Vince third in 2:09.66.

Resende, the outstanding senior swimmer, won the IM in 2:11.62. Freshman Owen Dauw was second in 2:13.33.

Dexter swept the top three spots in the 50 free with Smith first (23.49), Smaby second (24.19) and Coy third (24.37).

Dylan O’Connor, a senior, won the butterfly in 57.11. Ryan O’Connor, a freshman, was third in 1:03.00.

Smaby won the 100 free in 53.73 with Dauw taking a very close second in 53.82.  

Kopinski returned to the winner’s circle with his first-place time of 5:03.4 in the 500 free. Coy, a freshman, was third in 5:31.38. Sophomores Ethan Vince was fifth (5:51.09) and Jason Hazelton was sixth (6:06.61).

Dexter’s team of Smaby, Merz, Dauw and Kopinski (two freshmen and two juniors) won the 200 free relay in 1:37.81.  

Resende won his second race of the day with his first-place time of 57.87 in the backstroke. Smith won the breaststroke in 1:11.73 with Haidl third in 1:14.44.

Dexter went one-two in the 400 free relay. The team of Kopinski, Dauw, Resende and Smith touched first in 3:35.25 and the team of Coy, Haidl, Ryan O’Connor and Dylan O’Connor took second in 3:40.43.

Dexter will swim on Saturday at the Waterford Kettering Warrior Relays. They host Huron at 6 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 21 in an SEC dual-meet at Wylie.
