Swimming: Eagles open season with win over Lincoln

The Skyline Men’s Swim & Dive team is excited to be back in the pool for the start of the season!

At the helm of the team is a veteran coaching staff led by head coach Mo-Jo Murrett and assisted by Will Brenner, Paul Griffith, and Kent Tschannen. This year’s captains are seniors Lucas Caswell, Luke Jordan, Chris Kurniawan, and Andrew Xi.

The following swimmers and divers make up the team:

Seniors – Zander Barr, Caswell, Albert Gu, Jordan, Kurniawan, Phil Trampler, Xi

Juniors – Charlie Hazzi, Wesley Jenkins, Stuart Knight, Aidan Mazza, Owen McKelvey, Henry Strait, Sawyer Thompson, Connor Zillich

Sophomores – Marlowe Hartnett, Robby Shannon

Freshmen – Burak Aricioglu

The Eagles rang in the new 2023-24 season this past Thursday with a 110-70 win over Lincoln High School, which boasted a bevy of top five finishes and State Meet / Michigan Swim Coaches Association (MISCA) Meet qualifying times by the swimmers and divers!

The Eagles won the 200 Medley Relay (Kurniawan, Caswell, Jordan, Barr) as well as the 200 Free Relay (Kurniawan, Thompson, Xi, Zillich). In addition, Skyline captured 3rd in the 200 Free Relay (Mazza, Shannon, Strait, Jenkins).

In the individual events, top five finishes were turned in by Aricioglu (500 Free-5th), Barr (100 Free-3rd, 100 Back-3rd), Caswell (200 Free-1st,100 Breast-1st), Gu (100 Back-4th, 100 Fly-5th), Jenkins (500 Free-3rd, 200 Free-4th), Jordan (100 Fly-2nd, 50 Free-3rd), Knight (Diving-1st), Kurniawan (100 Back-1st, 200 IM-2nd), Mazza (100 Breast-3rd, 200 IM-5th), Shannon (50 Free-4th, 100 Free-4th), Strait (100 Breast-4th), Thompson (100 Free-1st, 200 Free-3rd), Trampler (Diving – 5th), Xi (50 Free-1st, 100 Fly-1st), and Zillich (200 IM-1st, 500 Free-2nd).

Skyline qualified for the MHSAA State Meet and/or MISCA Meet in seven events. The 200 Medley Relay qualified for States, as well as Caswell in the 200 Free and 100 Breast. In addition, MISCA qualifying swims included the 200 Medley Relay and the 200 Free Relay, as well as the following individual events: 200 Free (Caswell), 100 Fly (Xi), 100 Free (Thompson), 500 Free (Zillich), and 100 Breast (Caswell).

This Thursday, December 14, Skyline will host Birmingham Seaholm at 6pm. Go Eagles!
