Girls Basketball: Dreads fall to Blissfield in Hardwood Classic (see WLAA-D photogallery)

Maybe it was the holiday blues. But whatever it was, the Dexter girls’ basketball team couldn’t get the offense going on Thursday in a Michigan Hardwood Classic contest against Blissfield at Romulus High School. The Dreadnaughts fell behind early and could never recover in a 51-43 loss in the non-league game and their last of 2023.

Blissfield jumped out to an early 7-0 lead before Alena Blumberg hit a triple and Heidi Fuchs scored inside to cut the deficit to 7-5. Blissfield led 9-5 after the first quarter.

Dexter was outscored 12-5 in the second quarter to trail 21-10 at halftime.

The Dreadnaughts won the third quarter 13-11 to cut into the lead. Both teams cranked up the offense in the fourth quarter, with Dexter scoring 20 to Blissfield’s 19. But it was too little too late for the Dreadnaughts, who fall to 5-2 on the season.

Blissfield scored 14 of their 19 points in the fourth quarter at the free-throw line.

Blumberg led Dexter with 19 points, including eight in the fourth quarter. Addison Chase scored all of her 13 points in the second half. Fuchs finished with seven points while Addison Wylie and Harper Backus each scored two.

The Dreadnaughts return to action at 3 p.m., Friday, Jan. 5 against visiting Hamtramck in another non-league game.
