Washtenaw Community College celebrates Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s legacy

ANN ARBOR – Washtenaw Community College (WCC) will host its 18th annual celebration of the legacy of civil rights pioneer Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. on Thursday, January 11. The public is welcome. Admission is free.

The event will be 3:30-5 p.m. on the second floor of WCC’s Student Center and will feature refreshments, live music from artist C3 and the announcement of the 2024 Equity in Action Awards. The campus is located at 4800 E. Huron River Drive, Ann Arbor. View a campus map for building locations.

Michigan Works! Southeast Executive Director Shamar Herron will deliver a keynote speech inspired by Dr. King’s message of economic justice and, specifically, his words from a 1968 sermon: “[If] a man doesn’t have a job or an income, he has neither life nor liberty nor the possibility for the pursuit of happiness. He merely exists.”

WCC’s efforts and goals of ensuring economic equity no matter what zip code persons are from in Washtenaw County aligns with Dr. King’s philosophy of economic justice.

The Equity in Action Awards are presented during the annual MLK Day Celebration and honor WCC employees and community members who embody the college’s mission to make a positive difference in people’s lives by exemplifying the values and ideals of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., specifically in the areas of advocacy, leadership and service.
