Swimming: Dexter edges Skyline in close SEC Red showdown

The Skyline men’s swimming and diving team won two of the three relays and took first place in seven individual events but Dexter’s depth helped push the Dreadnaughts into the win column in an exciting SEC Red dual-meet on Thursday at Wylie.

Dexter knocked off Skyline 97-88 to improve to 6-0 in dual-meets on the season including 3-0 in the very competitive SEC Red.

Skyline’s team of Owen McKelvey, Luke Jordan, Lucas Caswell and Chris Kurniawan won the opening medley relay in 1:42.36. Dexter’s foursome of Jude Smith, Lucas Coy, Matthew Resende and Owen Ragnes took a close second in 1:44.58.

Skyline senior Andi Xi won the 200 free in 1:50.96 while Dexter took the next two places with Dylan O’Connor (1:52.74) and Owen Dauw (1:54.64).

In the 200 IM, Skyline junior McKelvey touched first in 2:01.27 while Dexter again went two-three with Liam MacNeil (2:14.3) and Eric Smaby (2:17.09).

Caswell, a talented senior, won the 50 free for the Eagles in 22.64. Speaking of talented swimmers, Resende was a very close second for Dexter in 22.99. Skyline’s Zander Barr was third in 23.78.

Skyline junior Stuart Knight took first in diving with 230.75 points. Dexter freshman Felix Davis was second (159) and Skyline’s Phil Trampler was third (124.1).

Resende, a senior, touched first in the butterfly for the Dreadnaughts with a time of 55.94. Kurniawan was second for Skyline in 56.03 and Dauw was third for Dexter in 57.80.

Xi won his second race of the day with his winning time of 50.26 in the 100 free. Smith was second for Dexter in 50.43 and Ragnes took third for Dexter in 52.19.

McKelvey won his second race of the day with a winning time of 4:58.53 in the 500 free. Dexter took the next two spots with O’Connor second (5:00.97) and MacNeil third (5:20.28).
Dexter’s 200 free relay team of Resende, Coy, Steven Merz and Ragnes touched first in 1:35.43. Skyline’s team of Xi, Barr, Robby Shannon and McKelvey took second place in 1:37.67.

Skyline went one-two in the backstroke with Caswell first (56.92) and Kurniawan second (58.30). Smith was third for Dexter in 1:00.15.

Dexter then went one-two in the breaststroke with Coy first (1:08.07) and Jack Haidl second (1:12.18). Skyline’s Henry Strait was third (1:13.12).

Skyline won the 400 free relay as the team of Caswell, Connor Zillich, Kurniawan and Xi touched in 3:31.75. Dexter’s team of MacNeil, Dane Lee, Smaby and Haidl was second in 3:40.68.

Dexter faces another SEC Red challenge on Thursday when the Dreadnaughts host Saline.
