Girls Basketball: Skyline holds off Huron in SEC Red matchup

The Skyline girls’ basketball team not only rebounded from a loss earlier in the week but also got the offense rolling in a 51-40 win over Huron in an SEC Red Division game on Friday night. They more than doubled their offensive output from Tuesday’s loss to South Lyon.

The Eagles got off to a very strong first quarter on both ends of the court and took a 12-0 lead in the game. Skyline would continue to mix defenses and make it tough for Huron in the second quarter and took a 28-13 lead. The Rivers Rats worked hard to make a comeback and made four three-pointers in the fourth quarter and applied aggressive full-court defense.

But Skyline would convert some key baskets and took care of the ball to close out the game for the win.

Abby Yuan led the way for Skyline with 15 points and 18 rebounds – a huge double-double. Seven players scored with Vedha Kakarla (8), Anjali Kakarla (7), Zoie Reichert (9 rebounds) and Meredith Fischer (6), Addy Boucher (5) and Reva Patchava (4). Skyline out-rebounded Huron 57-35.

The River Rats were led in scoring by Jordyn Johnson with 13 points.

On Wednesday, Skyline lost at South Lyon 36-22.

The Eagles got off to a strong start with an 8-4 lead but South Lyon battled back to take an 11-8 lead to end the first quarter. Skyline had many good opportunities in the second quarter to take the lead and could not convert many shots and South Lyon was able to keep a 19-11 halftime lead.

Skyline competed hard throughout and on a better shooting night (only made 22% from the field) this would have been a very close game and possibly even a victory. Skyline was able to hold South Lyon’s leading scorer Isabella Nooe to only two field goals on 2/14 shooting with defensive pressure throughout.

Yuan led the Eagles with 6 points and 9 rebounds. Anjali Kakarla had 5 points, Patchava and Kennedy Wassef each scored 4 and Reichert had 3 points.
