Girls Basketball: Dexter rallies in fourth quarter to top Pioneer in District final

The Dexter girls’ basketball team just couldn’t get the offense in gear in the first three quarters of their District championship game on Friday against a talented Pioneer team. The Dreadnaughts trailed 26-20 heading into the final quarter.

But with their season on the line, Dexter put its foot on the gas and scored more points in the final period than they scored in the first three combined for a 44-35 win over Pioneer to win the District 13 title. The Dreadnaughts outscored visiting Pioneer 24-9 in the final quarter.

Dexter will play Canton at 7 p.m. on Monday, March 11 in a Regional semifinal game at Westland John Glenn. The winner will play the winner of Belleville-Novi in the finals at 7 p.m. on March 13 at John Glenn.

Pioneer led 12-8 after one quarter and 17-13 at halftime.

It was quite the final quarter for the Dreadnaughts, who did an amazing job of knocking down free throws when it mattered the most. Dexter converted 14 of 18 free-throw attempts in that final quarter and six different players contributed to the total.

Junior Alena Blumberg made 6-8 of free throws and scored eight of her team-high 12 points in that final period. Addison Chase hit a triple and made two free throws in the final quarter and finished with 10 points – including a three in the first quarter.

Harper Backus finished with nine points, Heidi Fuchs scored seven and Kendall Cabana and Alyssa Gullekson each scored three for the Dreadnaughts.

Jasmyne Gadson had 10 points to lead Pioneer. Rei Rei Powell and Emmanoel Davis each scored seven for the Pioneers.
