WLAA Concert Review: Alkaline Trio brings the power, promise and purpose to the stage

Alkaline Trio’s style has been primarily described as pop-punk, punk-rock, punk, emo and alternative rock. One can label them any of the above – if you are into labels – but what they really are is a high-energy, powerful and creative musical force that continues to crank out fresh and vibrant music.

They put on an electric show last Friday before a packed and appreciative crowd at the Royal Oak Music Theatre.

Full disclosure – I had only heard the name of the band previously and was completely unfamiliar with their music. Full disclosure II – I left the Royal Oak Music Theatre with not only a great appreciation of what they do but a t-shirt and CD as well.

I was very impressed with the melodic nature of the songs that really is a driving force behind their music. I’m not a punk expert or even diehard fan but I do have the Clash’s first two albums on speed dial and Alkaline Trio’s sound reminds me of that kind of high energy.

Lyrically, they make you think or laugh, or at the very least, make you consider.

“I got nightmares up and down my walls
I got some things that I should say
Walk like a zombie up and down these halls
Sleep like the undead, like the undead
At the end of the day”

Now that’s a pretty interesting scene.

Alkaline Trio’s “Break” off of ‘Blood, Hair, And Eyeballs’ is a real highlight for me. The crushing drums (shoutout to Atom Willard – he’s an amazing drummer) and perfect harmonies rise above the driving guitars and bass.

Comparisons are tricky and oftentimes misplaced. Can I say that Hot for Preacher has a little Morrisey vibe, especially the vocals. And I also hear Green Day and even a little Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds in the grooves – again, both compliments IMO.

But Alkaline Trio has their own and very unique sound, and their live show really demonstrates not only their brilliant musicianship but that energy and creativity that has been with them since they first hit the stage in 1996.

Music can have a very deep and lasting impact on our lives and it’s clear to see that this band resonates with a lot of people. Here is a comment from a fan on their new video on YouTube.

“Stuck in hospital with stage 4 cancer hoping it’s not the end. In so much pain and misery. Your music is such a sweet relief while I’m so miserable and maybe dying. Thank you guys. Have been a fan since ‘99-‘00 and you’ve gotten me through so much. Love you guys dearly and thank you greatly for the sliver of peace you’re giving me here near the end.”

Blood, Hair, and Eyeballs was recorded by Matt Skiba, Dan Andriano and since-departed drummer Derek Grant with GRAMMY winner Cameron Webb producing at Studio 606 in Northridge CA, and is the first Alkaline Trio album to be released via the band’s new label home, Rise Records.
