Staff and students raise awareness for the day by wearing their brightest, loudest and mismatched socks
Why the bright, loud, and sometimes mismatched socks on students and staff at Eberwhite Elementary and several other schools today?
Eberwhite fifth grade teacher Maria DeRosia explains that today’s the day to Rock Your Socks for World Down Syndrome Day. As she tells her students: The 21st day of March (3/21) was selected to signify the uniqueness of the triplication (trisomy) of the 21st chromosome that causes Down syndrome, and socks and chromosomes are shaped similarly. As the mother of a son with Down syndrome, she wants kids to remember that Sam just wants to be a friend and be included.
