Soccer: Dexter dominates Parma Western – See WLAA-D photogallery

The Dexter boys’ soccer team kicked off the season with some competitive soccer but not getting positive results on the scoreboard – until Monday. The Dreadnaughts took out their frustrations on Parma Western in a 6-0 victory in the non-league game.

Juniors Hayden Gaetino (2 assists) and Andrew Barbaro (1 assist) each had two goals to lead the home team on a warm evening. Senior Nick Kiss (1 assist)  and junior Tyler Craig also scored goals in the win. Senior Alex Helton earned an assist.

The Dreadnaughts feature a young roster but with plenty of experience at the varsity level. They return eight starters off last year’s team and should keep getting better as the season kicks along.

“We have a few  freshmen who are making an impact already,” says Dexter Coach Jamie Lewis. “Goalkeeper Thomas Griswalda started his first game against Parma after really standing out with the JV team. And freshman Modibo Outtara plays with incredible composure for his age and has been excellent to start the season.”

Dexter also features strong senior leadership led by captain Tristian Snyder (defensive center mid), Luke Nevin and Nick Kiss at wing, along with Alex Helton on defense. “They have all been excellent,” says Lewis.

Seniors Mason Vuocollo (goalie) has been solid and Trey Kuhr has been dangerous up top early in the season.

Dexter (1-2) lost its opener to SEC foe Huron 2-1 after being tied 0-0 at half. The Dreads then lost 2-0 at Mason in a non-league game.

“The game was pretty even in possession as well as chances but we could not finish in the final third,” Lewis said of the Mason game. “After we went down 1-0 we had a 1v1 with their goalkeeper and hit the crossbar. Both games could have gone either way.”

Gaetino, assisted by Nevin, scored Dexter’s goal against Huron.

The Dreads play on Thursday at Bedford.
