UMS announces return of No Safety Net series as part of 146th season

ANN ARBOR — The University of Michigan’s University Musical Society (UMS) proudly announces the much-anticipated return of its groundbreaking No Safety Net renegade theater series. With events occurring throughout the 146th season, this series promises a compelling lineup of performances that tackle some of today’s most pressing social issues with boldness, creativity, and critical insight.

Celebrated for its commitment to pushing boundaries and sparking dialogue, No Safety Net offers audiences a platform to engage with high-impact theater that challenges conventions and confronts complex themes head-on. This year’s series is exceptionally curated to foster meaningful conversations around topics such as democracy, social justice, and sexual politics, ensuring that each performance resonates deeply with contemporary societal dynamics.

“The return of No Safety Net is a testament to UMS’s dedication not just to presenting art, but also to creating space for critical discourse and community engagement,” said UMS President Matthew VanBesien. “In a time where societal issues are increasingly at the forefront of our collective consciousness, this series provides a vital outlet for exploration and conversation through the medium of theater.”

Contextual learning and engagement activities, from post-performance Q&As to panel discussions, will provide opportunities for community members to explore the themes of No Safety Net more fully. These activities are intended to encourage open and constructive dialogue and to embrace the calls to action embedded in the theatrical presentations.
