Main Street and State Street Districts Celebrate Approval of Unified Social District Plan

Ann Arbor – The Main Street Area Association and State Street District are pleased to announce the approval of their unified Social District plan by the Ann Arbor City Council and Michigan Liquor Control Commission.. This collaborative effort follows the success of the Social District in the Main Street area and marks an expansion of State Street District’s capacity and strategy in 2024, with strong support from its members for pursuing a social district initiative.

The Social District concept allows patrons to purchase alcoholic beverages from participating establishments and enjoy them within designated outdoor areas. This initiative has proven to be a popular and effective way to boost local businesses, especially in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, and to create a vibrant and welcoming atmosphere in downtown Ann Arbor.

Main Street’s Success: Since its inception, the Social District on Main Street has been met with enthusiasm from the community and local businesses. It has contributed to increased foot traffic, higher sales for participating businesses, and a key strategy to support A2 Summer Streets.

State Street’s Strategy: Motivated by growing enthusiasm among its members, the State Street District initiated the pursuit of its own Social District plan. Recent collaborations have evolved this into a joint effort, showcasing the district’s dedication to enhancing the downtown experience and aligning with the needs and aspirations of its business community.

A Unified Vision for Downtown: Main Street and State Street Districts are committed to ensuring that a unified Downtown Ann Arbor Social District is implemented with the highest standards of safety and community enjoyment. The plan continues designated, expanded boundaries, specific hours of operation, and collaboration with local law enforcement to maintain safety. With approval, the initiative will not only continue to support local businesses but also enhance the downtown experience, fostering a sense of community and connection for all.

Quotes:

“We’re excited to expand the social district footprint beyond Main Street, incorporating more of the downtown area. Over the past two years, Main Street has successfully managed the social district only within the Main Street boundaries, benefiting our local businesses and community. This expansion reflects the continued collaborative efforts of our associations, creating an even more vibrant and welcoming experience for both residents and visitors,” said Ashley Schafer, Executive Director, Main Street Area Association.

“This initiative goes beyond a business transaction; it’s about uniting our community and celebrating downtown Ann Arbor. By extending our collective support to local businesses across multiple downtown districts, we’re not only fostering growth but also enriching our community. State Street is proud to partner with Main Street and the City of Ann Arbor, leveraging our combined resources to create a meaningful impact for everyone involved,” said Angela Heflin, Executive Director of the State Street District.
