Field Hockey: Eagles showing improvement as regular season coming to an end

The Skyline field hockey had a great week of practice before taking part in the first annual Great Lakes Regional Field Hockey showcase in Dexter on Saturday.

In game one, the Eagles came away with a 1-1 tie against the Marian Mustangs.  Marian took the lead in the third quarter despite the Eagles carrying the play.  Skyline got the equalizer in the fourth quarter when Emerson Nalepa gathered the ball in the circle and fired a shot past the Marian goalkeeper.

In game two, the Eagles got the better of the Homewood Flossmoore, IL Vikings 3-0.  Skyline took control early and continued to pressure the Vikings throughout the game.  Karma Bailey and Keira Acosta- Velazquez combined for the shutout in goal.  Gabi Arocha and Maeve Kilbride controlled the middle of the field as the Eagles continued to get scoring chances.  Skyline’s fast start included two first quarter goals from Katelyn Carey and Emerson Nalepa.  Addison Peabody added a third goal in the second half off of a nice tip from a shot by Gabi Arocha.

The Eagles have showed steady improvement all season. After losing to Huron 4-1, Skyline came back five days later and beat the River Rats 1-0 on Sept. 23. The Eagles ended September with a tough 1-0 loss to East Grand Rapids.

The Eagles host Saline at 7 p.m. on Wednesday in the final regular season game of the year.
