Girls Cross Country: Local teams run in SEC Red Championship (see WLAA-D photogallery) 

Saline edged Pioneer to the finish line and the youngsters dominated the top of the race card at Thursday’s SEC Red Division Championship at Hudson Mills Metropark.

It was a perfect day for a run and the Hornets landed in first place with 37 points, finishing just five points ahead of talented Pioneer. Skyline took third place with 74 points followed by Huron (94) and Dexter (112) in the eight-team field.

The top four finishers in the race were freshmen runners. Pioneer’s Natasza Dudek won going away with a time of 17:50.01. Saline’s McKinley Jones was second in 18:27.60, Pioneer’s Sienna Klemmer was third in 18:36.09 and Saline’s Savannah Staton was fourth in 18:40.59. Skyline’s Lucia Llanes, another freshman, placed eighth in 18:59.72.

Pioneer took four of the top 11 spots in the race. Junior Hana Boggess was fifth (18:48.82) and sophomore Nina Moore was 11th in 19:18.25. Senior Lucy Pike was 22nd in 20:17.20, junior Bridget Kerber was 26th in 20:36.85 and senior Clara Peikert was 35th in 21:29.88.

Skyline’s extremely young team had a very strong day as the Eagles landed in third place. Joining Llanes in the top 10 was Becca Van Lent, who ran a PR time of 18:51.23 to finish in sixth place. The sophomore, who placed 48th at last year’s state finals, was fourth at the recent River Rat Open.

Two sophomores placed in the top 20 for Skyline: Irie Scrase was 16th (19:43.82) and Isla Tharp was 19th in 20:05.35. Freshman Lila Edison was 25th in 20:30.48, junior Adrienne Stewart was 31st in 20:58.51 and sophomore Alison Kauffman was 33rd in 21:23.57.

Huron had three freshmen finish in the top 30 but were led by Lucinda Paliani. The senior, who is on her way to a fourth state finals appearance, ran a PR time of 18:51.4 to finish seventh overall. She has finished top 10 in her last five races.

Huron junior Leena Shelgikar continued her strong season with a 14th place finish time of 19:34.36. The freshmen were next for the River Rats: Sadie Bohnsack was 21st (20:10.86), Mira Shelgikar was 23rd (20:22.13) and Zoe Bossmann was 29th (20:52.70). Senior Julieta Turon was 39th in 22:30.30 and senior Lianne Liu was 45th in 23:19.08.

Dexter celebrated Senior Day with five seniors landing in the top 34 led by Alena Blumberg, who finished 13th with a time of 19:29.69. Sophomore Kodie Snyder was 20th (20:09.42), senior Addison Bruckman was 24th (20:24.23), freshman Layla Blumberg was 27th (20:47.11), junior Amelia Cribbins was 28th (20:49.33), senior Annabel O’Haver was 30th (20:54.92) and senior Hannah Sisson was 34th in 21:25.03 for the Dreadnaughts.
