YPSILANTI — Eastern Michigan University is proud to announce that Milani Motton, a resident of Detroit, Michigan, has been named a Presidential Scholar for 2024. Motton is one of only 21 exceptional students selected for this prestigious honor, awarded to top-performing first-year students who demonstrate academic excellence, leadership, and a strong commitment to their communities.
“The Presidential Scholarship means everything to me,” said Motton. “I’m able to pursue a major I’m passionate about, which motivates me to keep working hard and maintain that drive for success.”
The EMU Presidential Scholarship is the most prestigious award, valued at up to $100K. The scholarship covers full tuition, fees, and room and board for four years. Presidential Scholars are active and engaged members of The Honors College at EMU, complementing their academic experience with further opportunities for critical thinking, community engagement, and leadership. The scholarship opportunity is aligned with EMU’s commitment to helping students achieve their educational goals while positively impacting the world.
Motton graduated from Cass Tech High School with an extensive background in health organizations and plans to pursue a nursing degree. In high school, Motton was a member of the National Honors Society, Red Cross Club, Doctors of Tomorrow, Medical Careers Club, Future of Detroit Club, Cranbrook Horizons-Upward Bound Program, and Cass Tech Guitar Ensemble. Motton was also involved with the Rhonda Walker Foundation, where she participated in fundraisers and donated goods to local youth in the Detroit Rescue Mission. After college, Motton hopes to work at Corewell Health as a registered nurse.
“We are excited to have such an impressive group of scholars join us at EMU this fall,” said Anne Eisenberg, dean of the Honors College. “They come from different backgrounds, cultures, and countries, but they all share a passion for learning, service, and leadership. They are an impressive bunch as well, with a mean SAT score of 1320 and an average high school GPA of 4.02.”
Moving forward, Motton is excited to leave her mark on campus. “I am excited to join organizations and engage the EMU community through giving back. This scholarship allows me to explore beyond my limits and discover new connections that EMU offers.”
