Swimming: Pioneer touches first at competitive SEC Red championships

The SEC Red Division held its annual Swimming and Diving Championships last Friday and Saturday at Saline High School. The four-time state champion Pioneers dominated the event swimming to a first-place finish with a score of 719 points.

Skyline had a very strong showing, touching second with 450 points and Huron took third with 283 points to complete an Ann Arbor sweep at the top of the standings. Saline was fourth with 250 points, followed by Dexter (244), Bedford (125), Lincoln (115) and Monroe (114).

It was a fast race among many of the top programs in the state with three pool records getting broken.

The Pioneers opened with a win in the medley relay. The team of Bridgette Kamara, Tallulah Beg, Meg Pinkerton and Reese Heidenreich touched first in 1:44.82. Dexter’s team of Kayce McAllister, Harper Brown, Rebekah Murillo and Sydney Collins took second in 1:53.15. Skyline’s team of Britta Coultas, Sofia Torres, Julianna Peoples and Anika Vaitkevicius was third in 1:54.22.

Skyline sophomore Adrienne Schadler won the 200 free in 1:48.61, a new pool record at Saline. Pioneer took the next four spots including Katelyn Van Ryn in second (1:53.09) and Suryn Lee in third (1:55.62).

Pioneer went one-two in the 200 IM with Jayla Kuzak first in 2:06.05 and Ursula Ott in second (2:06.25). Bridgette Kamara was fourth (2:12.12) and Skyline senior Sofia Torres was fifth in 2:12.72.

In the 50 free, Pioneer took the top four spots: Cecilia Walusek was first (23.80) followed by Heidenreich (24.28), Cecilia Cook (24.46) and Pinkerton (24.55). Dexter’s McAllister was fifth (24.72) and Vaitkevicius was sixth for Skyline in 25.62.

Pioneer went 3-4 in diving with Grace Daly (381.2) and Arianna Pagel (361.2).

Beg took second for Pioneer in the butterfly with a time of 58.45. Skyline’s Torres was third (59.13) and Pioneer’s Yahanna Silva Castro was fourth (59.58).

Ott led a Pioneer sweep in the 100 free as the senior took first in 52.01. Walusek was second (52.25), Heidenreich was third (52.83) and Pinkerton fourth (54.22). Skyline senior Britta Coultas was fifth (56.01).

Schadler won her second individual race of the event and set her second pool record with a time of 4:53.63 in the 500 free. Pioneer’s Harper Feyen was second (5:08.94), Skyline’s Annabelle Balazer was third (5:17.56) and Pioneer’s Ava Griffith was fourth (5:20.03).

Pioneer set a pool record in the 200 free relay as the team of Heidenreich, Walusek, Ott and Van Ryn touched first in 1:34.24. Skyline’s team of Lenci Oleksinski, Vaitkevicius, Balazer and Schadler took second in 1:41.74. Huron’s team of Juna Sakamoto, Catherine Huang, Esmie Salinas and Jane Hu took third in 1:43.97. Dexter’s team of Brown, McClellan, Sydney Collins and Emma Bishop took fifth in 1:47.01.

McAllister touched first in the backstroke for Dexter with a winning time of 58.07. Pioneer took the next three spots with Cook (58.56), Kamara (58.76) and Van Ryn (58.78). Skyline’s Britta Coultas was fifth (1:02.89).

In the breaststroke, Pioneer’s Beg touched first in 1:05.51. Dexter senior Harper Brown was second in 1:06.06 followed by Pioneer’s Suryn Lee (1:06.74) and Huron’s Sakamoto (1:07.52).

Pioneer’s team of Ott, Walusek, Kuzak and Van Ryn won the 400 free relay in 3:29.35. Skyline’s team of Torres, Balazer, Coultas and Schadler took second in 3:40.26. Dexter’s team of Bishop, Grace McClellan, Rebekah Murillo and McAllister was third in 3:53.82. Huron’s team of Rachel Kim, Natalie Rudolph, Cloe Streeter and Abigail Whitehead was fourth in 3:59.97.
