Girls Basketball: Dexter dribbles past young Skyline in SEC game

The young Skyline girls’ basketball team continues to show signs of improvement as the season moves along but the Eagles ran into one of the best teams in the area on Tuesday when they visited the talented Dexter Dreadnaughts.

Dexter, deep, skilled and well-coached, are expected to make a long run once the postseason tips off next month and just keep getting better. The Dreadnaughts jumped out to a 20-13 lead after the first quarter on the Eagles and then took over the game with a 23-8 run in the second quarter for a 43-21 halftime lead.

Dexter led 62-33 after three and scored a 70-38 win over Skyline in the SEC showdown.

The Dreadnaughts had balanced scoring at the top of the scoresheet. Alena Blumberg (three triples) scored 15 of her 20 points in the first half and Addy Wylie (two triples) scored 12 of her 20 points in the first half. Eight Dreadnaughts scored in the game including Addison Chase (11 points, three triples), Layla Blumberg (nine points), and Lizzie Lewis (4 points).

Skyline also had eight players reach the scoresheet. Freshman Jane Jordan led the Eagles with 15 points. Sadie Jordan, also a freshman, had eight points. Senior Abby Yuan had four points.

Dexter knocks off Monroe

The Dreadnaughts took care of SEC foe Monroe 57-37 on Jan. 29 in a league game.

The game was much closer than the final score indicates. In fact, the game was tied 8-8 after the first quarter and the Dreads led 23-22 at halftime. But Dexter switched gears in the second half (must have been a good halftime speech) and outscored the Trojans 17-8 in the third quarter and 17-7 in the final quarter.

Dexter had four players reach double figures as they spread around the wealth in this SEC victory. Freshman Layla Blumberg shot the lights out with four triples and a team-high 16 points. Alena Blumberg had 13 points, Chase had 11 points and Wylie 10 points to lead Dexter.

Skyline tops Lincoln

Skyline came out strong on Friday against the Railsplitters and used full-court defensive pressure leading to transition baskets and scoring inside against the Lincoln zone to build an early 11-3 lead and then a 25-15 halftime lead. Skyline won the game 44-29 despite missing scoring opportunities (10-29 shooting from inside the paint).

Jane Jordan had 15 points, 6 rebounds and 3 steals; Sadie Jordan had 8 points, 7 rebounds and 4 assists; Zoie Reichert had 8 points and 4 rebounds; Abby Yuan had 4 points and 8 rebounds; Josie Lovelace had 4 points, 3 rebounds and 2 assists; Kennedy Wassef had 7 rebounds; Alex Strauss had 2 points and 6 rebounds; and Ceci Tuczak had 3 points.
