Barton-Bandemer Pedestrian Tunnel Construction Underway!

Exciting progress is happening along the Border to Border (B2B) Trail! Construction of the Barton-Bandemer pedestrian tunnel began on March 24, 2025, bringing a much-needed connection between Bandemer Park and Barton Nature Area. This collaborative effort between the City of Ann Arbor, Washtenaw County Parks and Recreation Commission (WCPARC), and the Huron Waterloo Pathways Initiative (HWPI) will enhance safe and accessible trail connections for pedestrians and cyclists.

“Currently, there is no safe and legal connection for pedestrians and bicyclists between the B2B Trail in Bandemer Park and Barton Nature Area or Huron River Drive,” said Ann Arbor Parks & Recreation Capital Project Manager Hillary Hanzel. “The pedestrian tunnel will provide that important connection and a safe pedestrian and bicycle gateway for the city.”

Once completed in fall 2025, this new tunnel will be a key link in the B2B Trail, strengthening connections between Ann Arbor and the communities of Delhi and Dexter to the west.

What to Expect During Construction

While we’re thrilled about this improvement, some temporary access restrictions are in place:

  • The gravel parking lot off Huron River Drive and the pedestrian bridge to Barton Nature Area are closed.

  • A pedestrian detour is in place in Bandemer Park around the construction zone.

  • A 48-hour railroad track outage is scheduled for June 3–4, closing the vehicle bridge into Bandemer Park from Barton Drive.

  • For your safety, please follow all posted detours and signage.
