Soccer: Dexter takes two games, including 3-1 over Chelsea

The Dexter boys’ varsity soccer team enjoyed sweep week as they took two games this week, including an impressive 3-1 win Thursday over rival Chelsea.

Playing without recently injured captain and team leader Alex Doletzky, sophomore Hayden Newton scored the opening goal of the rivalry game between Dexter and Chelsea on a perfectly struck volley from 25 yards out.

After the opening goal, both teams settled in and Dexter carried the majority of possession and opportunities on goal until the very crafty Chelsea midfielder Nathan Quintana slipped a perfect pass in for Chelsea to make the game 1-1 which is where it stayed until halftime.

The second half started slow for Dexter, but Newton again found the back of the net on a goal set up by Sam Harshe and assisted by Noah Lewis in the box. With the game still in doubt, Harshe scored his ninth goal and 14th point of the season to give Dexter a two-goal margin on a perfectly placed pass from sophomore midfielder Nick Williamson.

On Tuesday, Dexter knocked off Lincoln, 8-0.

Dexter hosted a young and improved Ypsilanti Lincoln team led by Abdisa Kabeto and Ali Al-qaid. With the temperature near 90 degrees at kickoff it took a while for Dexter to finish their chances and really start clicking.

At the 10 minute mark, Jake Avery got the scoring started on a pass from Daryl Bell. After the first goal was scored, Matt Roller, a senior defender, scored the next two on passes from Harshe and Newton.

Nick Uranga and Harshe scored before halftime to put the game out of reach.

The second half featured two goals from new team member and foreign exchange student from Italy Simone Bulante and a well struck ball by Riley Cyrlunik.

The Dexter defense was led by senior captain Caden Doll, who assisted Bulante and controlled the Lincoln attack throughout the game.
