The Dexter football team kept the pedal down on its impressive drive to the postseason with a 27-20 victory Friday night over host Tecumseh.
Small picture stuff: The Dreads were trailing the Indians 12-7 in the second quarter and came back to take the lead. After Tecumseh came back early in the third quarter to tie the game at 20-20, the Dreadnaughts regrouped and answered with what turned out to be the winning score. In previous years, when the football team would fall behind or something negative would happen, there would be a “here we go again” feeling. Not this year.
Big picture stuff: The win gives Dexter a 4-2 record with three games remaining on the schedule. Two wins in the last three games will automatically send Dexter into the postseason for the first time. Dexter went 5-4 in both 2010 and 2005 – there only two winning seasons since 1989. They have never been in the current high school playoff system that began in 1990.
Dexter hosts Pinckney on Friday as part of homecoming. The Pirates are just 2-4 on the season but are coming off a 43-28 win over Adrian on Friday. While their offense has been pretty good, Pinckney’s defense has allowed more than 32 points per game.
The Dreadnaughts then face a strong Lincoln club. The Railsplitters are 4-2 with wins over Chelsea, Adrian, Tecumseh and Pinckney. They lost to Saline and fell 39-14 last week to Jackson.
Dexter finishes the season against Whitehall, a Class B school. The Vikings are 4-2 on the season.
Dexter’s win against Tecumseh was another solid effort by the Dreadnaughts. They took a 7-0 lead in the first quarter on a 16-yard pass from Colin Parachek to Mason Loudermilk. Karl Kerska kicked the extra point to make it 7-0.
The Indians then scored two consecutive touchdowns to take a 12-7 lead early in the second quarter. But the Dreadnaughts responded with two scores of their own –both through the air. Parachek tossed a 37-yard TD pass to Alex Mills to give Dexter a 13-12 lead and then went ahead 20-12 on a 6-yard pass from Parachek to Mason Loudermilk.
The Indians tied the game at 20-20 in the third quarter. But Dexter again answered, this time with a 60-yard run by Antwan Ficklen to make it 27-20. Neither team scored in the fourth quarter.
Parachek finished 21 of 31 passing for 246 yards and three TDs. Loudermilk led Dexter with six catches for 52 yards while Mills had five grabs for a team-high 87 yards receiving. Andy Durand had four catches for 26 yards and Ficklen had three catches for 25 yards.
Charles Chapell and Sean Callahan each had five tackles and David Kreske had four tackles for the Dexter defense.
