Boys Basketball: Chelsea’s buzzer beater proves devastating for Dexter

Down two points with the clock ticking down, the Bulldogs went for the win and pulled it off to add another exciting chapter in the history of Chelsea-Dexter basketball.

Dexter’s Colin Parachek made one of two free throws with 7 seconds to play in the game, knocking down the second one. Chelsea quickly inbounded the ball and raced up the court. Junior Owen Brown got the ball deep on the wing – about 5 to 6 feet deep – and launched a triple that hit nothing but net and sent the Chelsea players and their fans into a frenzy on the Dexter home court.

Dexter Coach Tim Cain called the outcome “devastating,” especially considering how well the Dreadnaughts played for most of the night.

Parachek, a sophomore, led Dexter with 18 points. Marco Lucchesi scored 13 and Caden Doll and Antwan Ficklen each scored nine in the Dreadnaughts’ balanced attack.

Dexter falls to 2-9 on the season including 1-6 in the SEC White Division. The Dreadnaughts were coming off a strong showing against a very good Ypsilanti team and had been playing better. Chelsea (5-3 overall, 4-3 SEC White) won four of its first five games before losing to Lincoln and Ypsilanti by a combined 52 points.

Chelsea led 13-10 after the first quarter. Lucchesi hit a three-pointer just before the end of the second quarter to tie the game at 24-24 at halftime.

Parachek led Dexter in the third quarter, scoring nine points to lead the hosts to a 22-12 run that put them up 46-36 after three quarters.

The Dreads scored just eight points in the final quarter.

Dexter plays at Pinckney on Tuesday and hosts Tecumseh on Friday as part of a girls-boys doubleheader.
