City Council Hires OHM to Oversee Pedestrian Improvements

Monday night the Dexter City Council voted unanimously to hire the engineering / consulting firm OHM to oversee improvements to pedestrian crossings in the city.

At the previous meeting of the City Council on Feb. 25, OHM presented their overview of potential pedestrian improvements within the City. Their conclusions were based on the same model the City of Ann Arbor and Washtenaw County Road Commission have employed in improving pedestrian crossings.

With resounding support from the Council, OHM proceeded to prepare a scope of service for managing the advancement of targeted pedestrian improvements.

The scope of services from OHM include:

  • Advising the City in development of crosswalk policies within the city.
  • Develop a walking map for school routes map based on current student information from Dexter Community Schools.
  • Update the crosswalk analysis provided at the February 25, 2019 Council meeting based on the revised City Policy and pedestrian count data (to be collected by others).
  • Redesign a new sidewalk along Forest Street.
  • Develop design for new pavement markings, improved lighting, signs, sidewalk, and RRFBs at designated locations from the crosswalk analysis.
  • Develop bidding documents to allow for summer 2019 construction with a substantial completion date prior to the start of school (August 2019).

The price tag for OHM’s services for this project is $48,000. This does not include any actual construction costs.

The project is intended for the summer 2019 construction season with the tentative schedule as follows:

  • Topographic Surveys ………………………………….Mid-April 2019
  • Project Planning – Forest Street Sidewalk …….Early-April 2019
  • Project Planning – Mobility Study………………..Mid-April 2019
  • Design ………………………………………………………Mid-April through Late May 2019
  • Bidding………………………………………………………June 2019
  • Construction Date……………………………………….July 2019-August 2019

The City met this week with Dexter Community Schools to review the first draft of the school routes walking map.
