Baseball: Dexter holds off Pioneer in close SEC crossover game

The Dexter baseball team is certainly enjoying playing Ann Arbor teams this season. The Dreadnaughts improved to 4-0 against Ann Arbor schools following a close 5-3 victory over visiting Pioneer on Thursday.

Dexter blanked Huron 12-0 and swept Skyline (7-5, 6-3) earlier in the year in SEC crossover games.

The game between the Dreadnaughts and the Pioneers was close and well-played throughout the seven somewhat chilly innings. The game was tied 1-1 after two. Pioneer led briefly 2-1 before Dexter answered with three runs in the bottom of the third. Pioneer cut the lead to 4-3 with a run in the top of the fifth, but Dexter answered with a run in the bottom of the inning.

Pioneer had six hits and one error; Dexter had eight hits and one error.

Noah Kotre led the Pioneer offense with two hits, including a double, and a run scored. Wyatt Raymond (double), Michael Theisen, Drew Barnes and Sean Knorr each had a hit for the visitors. Hazen Westover walked twice and scored a run.

Stuart Demas started for the Pioneers and went four innings, allowing seven hits and four runs with no walks. Daniel Olson went two innings, allowing a run and hit with two strikeouts and no walks.

Dexter used three pitchers to put this game in the win column. Ben Cabana started and went two innings, allowing three hits and a run with two strikeouts and a walk. Kevin DeVoogd worked three innings and surrendered three hits and two runs with three strikeouts and no walks. Austin Bockrath had four strikeouts in his two hitless innings of works.

DeVoogd and Jacoby Haley (one run scored, one RBI) each had two hits for the Dreads. David Kreske’s double in the third inning drove in two runs for Dexter. Kreske also scored two runs. Nate Kniesteadt, Chase Gelmer and Andy Durand each had a hit for the Dreads.

Dexter plays at Chelsea on Monday (DH) starting at 4 p.m.

Pioneer hosts Saline on Monday starting at 4 p.m.
