“A Night at the Museum” is Friday, May 10
The Dexter Area Museum will host “A Night at the Museum” on Friday, May 10, 2019 from 7:00 to 9:00 PM at the Dexter Area Museum, 3443 Inverness Street, Dexter, Michigan.
This year the Museum is featuring a special exhibit of Family Bibles (including one that belonged to Wirt Dexter, son of Samuel Dexter). You will also find Dexter area memorabilia, self-guided tours of the Museum, the Hoatlin model train, and refreshments which will include finger foods, desserts and wine.
A tax deductible donation of $25 per person is suggested. Please call the Museum at 734-426-2519 or email DexMuseum@aol.com by May 6, 2019 for a reservation. Your tax deductible donation will help keep the Museum operating. The Dexter Area Museum is housed in the old St. Andrew’s UCC Church which was built in 1883 and moved to its current location in 1974. The historic collection of donated items is maintained by volunteers and we invite you to visit during our regular hours from 1 to 3 on Fridays and Saturdays, May through November.
Mother’s Day crafts May 11
On Saturday, May 11, 2019 from 10 am to noon the Market will be offering its annual Mother’s Day craft for kids 12 and under. Market visitors will also be able to receive a bike light, safety light wristband, or safety light armband as part of the Southeast Michigan Council of Governments’ (SEMCOG) Walk Bike Drive Safe Campaign. Scio Community Church hosting soccer camp
Scio Community Church at 1293 N. Zeeb Road will be sponsoring a week-long soccer camp (July 8-12 from 5:00 – 8:00 pm) for children ages 5-10 years old. This camp will be put on by Academia de Futbol Ventura (https://www.adfventura.com/).
Scio will also be hosting a Fall Fun Festival on Saturday, Sept. 7 from noon – 4 p.m. on the church grounds (1293 N Zeeb Road).
Water Tower Project Update
The rain over the past two weeks has been great for lawns and plants, but has caused some delay in the water tower project. The coating on the interior of the tower had to be applied while the humidity and temperature were at a certain level, plus the access panel on the top of the tower had to be open for proper ventilation for the workers inside. Despite the weather challenges, the contractor is completing the last interior coat application on the tower (Monday, May 6th). We now enter a 7-10 day curing period for the coating. To ensure that it is properly cured, a generator will be operating a dehumidifier and heater (if necessary) 24/7 for the next 7-10 days.
Once the coating is cured, we will begin the approximately 6-day process for bringing the tower back into service. The procedures for bringing the tower back online are governed by the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes and Energy (formerly MDEQ). The estimated time period in which we should be able to return to odd even water restrictions is between May 20th and May 23rd. A notice will be sent out as soon as the ban is lifted.
The City would like to thank everyone for their cooperation during this process. We have had to do very little enforcement of the ban and our water usage has stayed very consistent. We understand the inconvenience that the outdoor watering ban is to our water users. It is also a significant and stressful challenge for staff to keep the water system functioning properly without the availability of the tower. Fortunately, re-coating of the inside of the tower only needs to be done approximately once every 20 years.
Perennial Plant Sale, May 18
St. Joseph Church will host its 11th annual Perennial Plant Sale on Saturday, May 18 from 9 am to 5 pm., at 6805 Mast Road (corner of Mast and N. Territorial). Please use the Mast Road entrance. There will be a large assortment of Michigan hardy plants, trees and shrubs. Most plants are $1- $5. Fill in your garden with these low cost perennials.
Sixth annual DCS ArtWalk runs through May 20
It’s time to stroll Main Street in Dexter again. The Art teachers representing all schools in Dexter, grades Y5 – 12, have selected over 250 pieces of student art; both 2D and 3D, to be displayed in local businesses from April 30th through May 20th for the 6th annual ArtWalk.
The idea of an Art Walk came to the Art Department after searching for one central location to have student art viewable for longer than just one weekend.
This year, there is student art inside 10 local businesses, one being the Dexter District Library. If you happen to be in town during the next 28 days, please take some time to walk inside the following places to view our outstanding art for 2019: Aubree’s Restaurant, Dexter Bakery, Dexter Creamery, Dexter District Library, Dexter Pub, Hackney Hardware, Hearts & Flowers, PNC Bank,Revive, TCF Bank
Farmer’s Market
May 2019 will mark the 14th anniversary on Alpine Street in beautiful downtown Dexter for the Farmer’s Market. The Farmer’s Market is open May through October.
