“A Universe of Stories” All Summer at Dexter District Library

This year’s Summer Reading Program will begin on Monday, June 17 at 11:00 am when the Library presents comedian and magician Doug Scheer’s “Take Me to Your Readers” variety show.  Kids love magic and comedy but sometimes they don’t realize that magic is everywhere — especially in the library. This 45 minute program full of hilarious laughs and audience participation is for all ages and everyone is welcome. Following the performance, head down to Farmers Market for some light refreshments and a game of kick ball in the park with Library and Friends volunteers. Everyone is welcome.

Once again, the Library will be presenting Summer Reading Programs for all ages.  This year’s theme, “A Universe of Stories” was chosen to inspire everyone in the Dexter Community to dream big, believe in themselves, and create their own stories.  Kids ages 12 and under may register for the Reading Club or the Read-To-Me Club if they are not yet reading on their own. Teens and Tweens may participate in the Teen Read program while adults may join their own reading group.  All participants will receive weekly prizes or incentives to keep reading throughout the summer.  Registration for all of the Summer Reading Programs begins on Monday, June 17 at 9:00 am or you may register anytime throughout the summer.

In addition to this year’s Summer Reading Program, the Library will be presenting a summer calendar of events for everyone, including book clubs, live animal programs, craft activities, movies, an ice cream social, music, theater, science and other live performances for the entire family.  All of our upcoming events can be viewed on our website at www.dexter.lib.mi.us

Drop-In Summer Story Times will run from June 20 to August 1.  Summer Story Times are drop-in and held on Mondays and Thursdays at 11:00 am in the lower level meeting room.  This program is geared for ages 6 and under but everyone is welcome to attend one or both sessions.  Daycare centers may attend Summer Story Times but are asked to arrive early.  Each session lasts approximately 30 minutes.  Summer Story Times for children include picture, pop-up and interactive books, flannel-board stories, songs, puppets, finger plays, crafts and other activities that encourage a love of reading to your child.  These events are free and open to the public.

This year, Big Truck and Emergency Vehicle Day is scheduled for Saturday, June 22 from 10:00 am to 12:00 pm. An annual event at Dexter District Library, we will host a large variety of trucks and emergency vehicles for children and adults of all ages to experience, rain or shine.  The parking lot will be closed during this event to allow freedom to browse, tour and talk to the owners and operators of the wonderful machines that make our lives easier and safer.  Bring your camera, there will be plenty of photo opportunities with the vehicles and special guests from the Dexter Dreadbots Robotics Team and The Detroit Parade Company.  Everyone is welcome.

The Summer Reading Program will wrap up on Friday, August 2 at 11:00 am with Bev Meyer “The Music Lady”.  Join us for a fun-filled hour of live music, singing, dancing and audience participation with Bev Meyer, The Music Lady. Children of all ages are welcome. Following the program, Marc “The Balloon Meister” will be at Farmers Market making balloon animals for everyone. Refreshments will be served.

The Final Prize Drawing will be held on Monday, August 12.  Kids, tweens and teens who have completed the program will be entered into a final drawing with a chance to win tickets to the Detroit Tigers, The Henry Ford, the Toledo Zoo or the Ann Arbor Hands On Museum, as well as gifts cards and other great prizes.   Everyone who finishes the program can pick up a goody bag full of school supplies, coupons, snacks and other surprises from July 29 until school begins.   Everyone is welcome to sign up or participate in any of our summer events.
