Swimming: Skyline, Dexter make big splash in early season showdown

What do you call a dual-meet season opener between Skyline and Dexter in boys’ swimming and diving? How about a big splash!

Two of the best programs in the state made waves on Thursday during an early season showdown at Skyline High School and as expected, it was a close race to the final wall. The Eagles led 86-80 heading into the final race and took first and third in the 400 free relay to lock up a 96-84 win over the defending Division 2 State Champions.

Skyline’s team of Atticus Dewey, Ben Kurniawan, Derek Mrachko and Evan McKelvey took first in the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:41.02. Dexter’s team of Zach Norris, Stuart Bovich, Paul Schaefer and Tanner Sharp were a close second in 1:42.84. The Eagles also took third place.

Dexter went one-two in the 200 freestyle with Leo Varitek first (1:52.03) and Luke Sayler second (1:53.97). Skyline’s Grant Gorman was third in 1:54.96.

The Eagles reversed the points in the 200 IM as they went one-two with Kurniawan first (2:01.01) and Mrachko second (2:08.80). Norris was third for Dexter in 2:08.85.

Dexter’s Sharp sprinted to first in the 50 free with a time of 22.46. Skyline’s Matthew Lee was second (22.69) and teammate McKelvey third (22.97).

Dexter’s Cole Warren scored 238.90 points to take first in diving. Skyline’s Andrew-Vaughan was second with 119.55 points.

Skyline went one-two in the 100 butterfly with Kurniawan first in 51.73 and McKelvey second in 57.70. Dexter’s Bovich was third in 1:00.77.

In the 100 free, Sayler took first for Dexter with a winning time of 49.63. Skyline’s Lee was second (49.80) and teammate Dewey touched third (50.62).

Dexter’s Varitek went the distance to win the 500 free in 5:09.40. Skyline’s Gorman was second (5:15.49) with teammate David Koselka third (5:30.36). Dexter’s Adam Hauser was fourth (5:32.72) and teammate Griffin Bartscht was fifth (5:35.96).
The Dreadnaughts won the 200 free relay as the team of Sharp, Sayler, Schaefer and Varitek went 1:33.60. Skyline’s team of Lee, McKelvey, Deininger and Gorman swam second in 1:35.02.

Dewey won the backstroke in 56.97 for the Eagles. Dexter’s Norris was second (58.09) and teammate Bovich third (1:00.99).

In the breaststroke, Sharp was first for Dexter in 1:02.29 with teammate Scheafer in second in 1:05.53. Skyline’s Mrachko was third in 1:05.64.

The Skyline team of Kurniawan, Lee, Dewey and Jack Staunton won the 400 free relay in 3:30.80. Dexter’s Sayler, Varitek, Norris and Adam Hauser took second in 3:32.93.
