Dr. Julie Schumaker Elected Dexter Board of Education President

In a unanimous vote at the Feb. 10 Board of Education meeting, Dr. Julie Schumaker was confirmed as the new President of the Dexter Board of Education following the departure of former President, Michael Wendorf.

Schumaker previously served as the Board’s Vice President and with this change, the Board also voted unanimously to approve Trustee Ron Darr as the new Vice President.  Treasurer Dick Lundy and Secretary Mara Greatorex remain in their current officer positions.

With the exception of Lundy, who late last year celebrated 40 years’ service on the Board, Schumaker and Darr are currently the longest sitting Board members.  Schumaker was elected in 2003; Darr in 2002.

“I appreciate the support and confidence of my colleagues on the school board,” Schumaker says.  “I will do my best to lead the board in our common commitment to serving all students in Dexter Community Schools.”

“Each of us – as parents, grandparents, teachers, administrators, staff members, and community members – plays an important role in supporting our students,” she continues.  “Together, we can provide a high-quality education to develop, nurture and inspire the next generation.”

In addition to filling the empty Board Presidency, Wendorf’s seat on the Board must also be filled within 30 days of vacancy. The Board of Education is holding candidate interviews Tuesday, Feb. 25 and Wednesday, Feb. 26.

At Monday night’s Board meeting, Schumaker stated there are 18 candidates vying for the empty Board seat. Immediately following the Wednesday session, the Board is scheduled for a one-hour discussion to determine the new member.  The Board’s selection will be appointed at the conclusion of deliberation.
