Dexter District Library’s Family Summer Reading Events

This summer, the Dexter District Library’s Summer Reading Program will look much different.  We want to make it easier for everyone to participate in a way that helps maintain the safety and health of our community. This year’s Summer Reading Challenge, “Imagine Your Story,” will kick off on Monday, June 15 and continue through August 15.

“Imagine Your Story” will be DDL’s first online-only Summer Reading Challenge in the history of the Library, ensuring that everyone can safely engage with the Library as the community recovers from the public health emergency.  The program is for adults, teens and children of all ages.  Registration is easy and you can pre-register now by visiting https://dexter.beanstack.org/reader365.  You will earn reading and activity badges, win prizes and be entered in our final prize drawing if you complete the program by August 15.  There will also be special virtual events and fun learning activities to try at home as well as access to all of our virtual resources.

From June 15 to August 15 all of our summer reading events will be going virtual.  We’re planning an entire summer of exciting at-home events, including story times, book clubs and craft demonstrations.  Imagine your own story and explore everything we have to offer during the Dexter District Library’s annual Summer Reading Challenge. Drop-In Virtual Story Times are beginning at Dexter District Library.  This program is for toddlers and preschoolers but all ages are welcome.   Sessions are on Tuesdays at 10:30 am on our DDL facebook page from June 23 to August 11.  Everyone is welcome to join Ms Krista for a fun morning of picture, pop-up and interactive books, flannel-board stories, songs, puppets, finger plays and other activities that encourage a love of reading to your child.  Registration is not required.

On Friday, June 26 at 11:00 am, you’re invited to the Matt Sandbanks Shadow Factory. Let Shadow Puppeteer Matt Sandbank from Austin, Texas take you and your family to wild, whimsical worlds with his shadow puppets.  Adults, teens and kids of all ages will be surprised and delighted by his witty storytelling and amazing imagery.  This performance will be presented via Zoom and registration is required at https://dexter.lib.mi.us/events/matt-sandbanks-shadow-factory/

Super Stories Book club will begin on Thursday, July 2 at 11:00 am. Kids may participate by visiting our DDL facebook page where Ms Krista will present the program live. Join us for stories and activities related to our summer reading theme “Imagine Your Story”. This event is geared for kids in grade K though 2 but everyone is welcome to attend. Registration is not required.  Super Stories will be held each Thursday at 11:00 am through August 13. Different themes, books and activities will be presented at each session.

Dumpster Doug’s Ecology Show will be showing on our facebook page on Friday, July 3 at 11:00 am. Get ready to laugh with comedian, science wizard Doug Scheer as he teaches adults and kids of all ages about the earth, pollution, and what they can do to help save the environment. These lessons are mixed with zany outrageousness, crazy, make-believe “homework assignments”, and tons of audience participation.  We’ve got a recycling show that everyone will talk about for a long time.  Registration is not required.

Joel’s WonderReader Comedy/Magic Show visits on Friday, July 10 at 11:00 am.  Join us for Mad Hatter Joel Tacey’s WonderReader Comedy/Magic Show, featuring dazzling magic, goofy stunts and lot of fun and laughter. Registration is not required, everyone is welcome. The link to this event will be published on our facebook page, registration is not required.

On Wednesday, July 15 Join artist Corinne Roberts for a virtual drawing lesson focusing on dragons, unicorns and other mythical creatures. No prior drawing experience is required, just have your pencil and paper ready to follow along. On Thursday, July 16 at 11:00 am Acting Up Theater presents “Imagine You’re King”.  Welcome to Samelot where the King has decided that he wants to take some time off to concentrate on his YouTube channel.  But there still needs to be someone to take over the Kingdom so the King sets up a way to find a brave knight who is worthy of such an honor.  Enter the hapless Knight named Sir Laughs-A-Lot who hasn’t been able to do much with his life except laugh and act silly but now he must “Imagine He’s King”. This funny, virtual play is for all ages and will be presented on the DDL facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/DexterDistrictLibrary/?ref=bookmarks

All Star Readers Book Club for grades 3 and 4 will begin on Wednesday, July 22 from 1:00 to 2:00 pm.  Registration is required, you may register by signing up on our website. The book we will be discussing is Dragons and Marshmallows by Asia Citro which is available on ebook through Hoopla.  Join us for a fun, lively afternoon with Ms Krista leading our discussion, everyone is welcome.A link to our Zoom meeting room and a password will be sent to you prior to July 22.

On Friday, July 24 at 11:00 am “Imagine Your Story – A Virtual Magic of Reading Show” starring Baffling Bill comes to our facebook page.  Celebrate summer reading with this incredible show starring Baffling Bill and Company, filmed live from his Illusionarium Theater. Witness astounding feats of magic including the Enchanted Doll House Illusion, Floating Lady, Gus the Bunny, and more.  Don’t miss this one time family event that encourages summer reading for everyone.  Registration is not required.

On Monday, July 27 at 1:00 pm, all tweens in grades 5 through 7 are invited join us for a virtual book club to talk about Restart by Gordon Korman, along with some favorite books you’ve read this summer. A limited number of books will be available for curbside pickup. Art Journaling comes to DDL on Wednesday, July 29 at 1:00 pm.  Start your own visual journal during this fun, virtual class taught by artist Corinne Roberts.  Explore a variety of techniques to spark your imagination using just pencils, pens and paper.  No special art skill required, just be prepared to get creative.  Recommended for grades 5 through 12, but adults are welcome to attend.Registration is available on our website and is required for Zoom connection details. Jenifer Strauss Presents: Magic Wands and Leprechauns on Friday, July 31 at 11:00 am.  Imagine your story and enter the world of the “Little People”, solve mysteries and find gold with Story Artist Jenifer Strauss.  Join us for stories filled with magic, music and mischief.  This presentation will be via Zoom for all ages, registration is required. Our Summer Reading Challenge Wrap Up Program is Saturday, August 15 at 11:00 am for all ages.  Come and join Professor Snoopenheimer, professional snooper outer of mysterious stuff,  as he snoops out mythological fantasy beings. He snoops for “Goof Fairy Floyd” a very goofy  juggler, “Eddie Elf” who plays music on his “elf harp” and also “Mr Biggenosen” a troll much brighter than other trolls and who “knowsens” a lot  because he reads!   The show is way much fun with a message of helping to make the world a better place. Come and meet …”Fairies, Trolls and Elves! Oh My!”  This presentation will be via Zoom for all ages, registration is required.

The Summer Reading Challenge will wind down on August 15.  Any participant who has completed their reading and activity badges will win prizes and be entered into our final prize drawing.  Everyone is encouraged to register and read for fun throughout the summer.

Please Note: The  Summer Reading Challenge WILL NOT be offering an in-person option this year. All participation must be done online through Beanstack.
