The Dexter girls’ golf team has played well all season and worked a little extra harder getting their game ready for the SEC Championships on Thursday at Rustic Glen Golf Course.
The results included a few best rounds of the season for several of Dexter’s players. It also included the ultimate prize as the hard work and dedication paid off for the Dreadnaughts, who shot a team score of 411 to finish first in the White Division of the SEC Championships. Pioneer won the Red Division title.
Pinckney and Chelsea were both only eight shots back of Dexter with 419 rounds as the Pirates and Bulldogs tied for second place. Tecumseh was fourth (426), Lincoln placed fifth (430), Jackson sixth (438) and Adrian seventh (469).
“The SEC women’s golf teams are very good, well coached and were all prepared for this championship match,” said Dexter Coach Greg Palkowski. “We have seen this all season long when playing in our SEC matches and we knew that in order to compete and have a chance to win our White Division we would have to be prepared and play some of our best golf this season.”
And that’s exactly what the Dreadnaughts did and were rewarded with the title.
Dexter was led by junior Olivia Naylor with a season low and personal best score of 92. Junior Hannah Finch also shot a season low and personal best 100 (47-53; the 47 for 9 holes is also a season low and personal best).
Junior Clare McCormick shot a 109, junior Gaby Matos fired a 110, junior Camryn Chase shot a 112 and junior Sophia Steinert fired a 121.
“The dedication and work ethic to prepare for this championship match was just amazing, along with all the school work and other commitments,” Palkowski said.
Naylor was named to the First Team SEC All-Conference Team.
