Boys Basketball: Dexter redefines fast start with 25-0 run against Jackson

There is getting off to a good start – and then there is what the Dexter boys’ basketball team accomplished Tuesday night at Jackson.

Because of the rule changes this year, visiting teams get the ball first to start the game. There are no jump balls (not quite sure why). When the Dreadnaughts were handed the ball to start the game with Jackson they apparently didn’t want to give it back as the Dreadnaughts scored the first 25 points of the game.

Let’s rephrase that for emphasis. Dexter started the game on a 25-0 run.

“We came out on a mission,” said Dexter Coach Jason Rushton in one of the greatest understatements of 2021. Anyway, mission accomplished!

Jackson hit a triple with 14 seconds left in the first quarter to at least get on the board in its own gym. The Dreadnaughts took a 25-3 lead into the second quarter and expanded it to a 43-17 halftime lead.

Dexter outscored its host 16-6 in the third quarter to take a 59-23 lead into the final quarter.

Cal Bavineau scored a career-high 17 points, including nine in that first quarter. The junior guard also had eight assists and three steals. Sophomore Evan Haroldson was steady all night with 14 points. Senior Colin Parachek added 13 points, seven rebounds and four steals. And senior Aidan Dexter scored 11 points.

Senior Sam Sterlitz was solid again defensively with four points, 11 rebounds and four blocks.

Dexter improves to 9-3 on the season with Senior Night coming up on Friday against Tecumseh.
