Track & Field: Dexter hosts Larry Steeb Meet of Champions

Dexter hosted the Larry Steeb Meet of Champions on Tuesday, bringing some of the top athletes in the region together for a high-quality meet before Saturday’s State Championships. No team scores were kept, but 40 different schools were represented.

Dexter Boys had 3 relay teams place in the meet. The 4x200m set a new Dexter school record with a time of 1:30.43. The team of Wilson Kasischke, Micah Davis, Cole Sheldon, and Cole Cabana broke the 33 year old mark.

Kasischke added a 6th place finish in the 300m intermediate hurdles.

Dexter’s other 2 relays that placed were the 4×400 with Kasischke, Cabana, Davis, and Nathan Gariepy. And the 4x800m with Josh Lamb, Owen Ackerman, Adam Hauser, and Brandon Anderson.

Finishing up on the track, seniors Conor Kolka placed 7th in the 1600m running a personal best of 4:29.35, and Nathan Gariepy finished 6th in the 400m with a time of 52.10.

The field events had a 2nd place in the Pole Vault by Sheldon with a jump of 15-8, and a 3rd place by Noah Schults at 15-6. Sheldon also took 4th in the Long Jump with a leap of 19-.05, and in the High Jump, Samuel Fitzpatrick took 3rd at 5-8. Danny Gilbert took 8th in the shot at 41-11.

The Girls on the track had several placers as well.

Gracie Burns finished in 5th for the 200m at 26.83. Juniors Ashley Mitchell and Amanda McGill each ran personal bests. Mitchell finished 8th in the 800m with 2:21.81, and McGill 7th in the 1600m with 5:23.23. Freshman Kate Varitek took second in the Freshman 1600m with a personal best of her own at 5:29.96.

The ladies also placed 3 relay teams, led with a 4th place in the 4×800 with McGill, Varitek, Mitchell, and Megan O’Day at 10:12.22. 6th in the Distance Medley Relay with Sidney Streetman, Faith Jones, Allison Berkholz, Abigail Fox at
14:02.17, and 7th in the 4x20m relay with Maggie Jordan, Gwen Tatara, Hannah Berenson, and Gracie Burns at 1:50.35. Field events were well represented with

4 Dreadnaughts placing in the Pole Vault. Sophia Mettes 12-7, Josie Mettes 11-3, and Makenzie Stock, 10-9 went 1-2-3 respectively, and teammate Abigail Van Noord finished 7th at 9-9. Josie Mettes was awarded the Larry Steeb female field event athlete of the year for her outstanding performances in the Pole Vault. Haley Craig was 2nd in the High Jump at 4-10, Jamie Giese finished 4th in the Shot Put with a toss of 35-11, and Abby Marek finished 8th in the Discus at 98-11.

Dexter will wrap up the season by competing in the Division 1 State Championships at East Kentwood High School this Saturday.
